OUR HISTORY

 

Started in the Summer of 1998, originally calling ourselves: 

“CARP” – CHINESE AMERICAN RECREATION PROJECT

In September 1998 the name of the organization was changed to

“ASIAN AMERICAN YOUTH CENTER (AAYC)”.

AAYC  receives our non-profit 501©(3) status - January of 2001

 OUR EVENTS 1998  

“YOUTH RECREATION DAY ‘98” – Sponsored as “CARP” held at Columbus Park on September 13th, 1998, sports competition event for kids, 150 Kids participated. Events such as 50/100 Yard Dash, Football Thru the Tire Throw, Marathon Circle Run, Basketball Foul Shooting, Around the World Basketball, Ping Pong & Spoon Walk, Chess & Checkers Tourney, Tug of War, and Origami design making. T-Shirts were given out to all participants. Trophies were given out to all winners.

OUR EVENTS 1999  

 “WINTER FAIR ‘99” – held at PS 124 on January 31, 1999, Carnival Games and Cultural Performances for kids. 200 kids participated. Performances by the Golden Lions Club, PS 124 Band, Chinese Music Ensemble and Arts Gates Center. Dignitaries were invited to speak, Councilwomen Kathryn Freed, District2, Deputy Chief (NYPD) Dewey Fong and PS124 Principal Janet Wong. Games & Crafts such as: Bean Bag Throw, Golf Putting, Nerf Ball Throw, Horse Shoe Throw, Paddle Ball, spelling Bee Contest, Raffle, Chinese Lantern Making (Chinatown History Project), Origami, and T-Shirt Iron on. T-Shirts, Prizes and Gifts were given out to all participants.

“YOUTH RECREATION DAY ‘99”held at Columbus Park on July 11th, 1999, sports competition and carnival games, 300 kids participated. Events such as3 on 3-Boys/Girls Basketball Tournament, 50/100 Yard Dash, Football Throw, Marathon Circle Run, Water Balloon Toss, Soccer Kick, Basketball Foul Shooting, Ping Pong & Spoon Walk, Chess & Checkers Tourney, Tug of War and Origami design making. T-Shirts were given out to all participants. Trophies were given out to all winners.

 

OUR EVENTS 2000

“WINTER FAIR 2000” - held at PS 124 on February 20, 2000, Carnival Games and Cultural Performances, 350 kids participated. Participants included the Golden Lions Club, PS 124 Band, Happy the Clown, NYC Fire Safety and Education Department. NYC Crime Prevention Unit, Gouveneur Hospital and ABC Learning Services. Games & Crafts such as: Charades, Fishing for Prizes, Bean Bag Throw, Golf Putting, Velcro Dart Throwing, Nerf Ball Throw, Horse Shoe Throw, Paddle Ball, Spelling Bee Contest, Ping pong and Rope Game, Raffle, Jig-Saw Puzzle, Electric Shock Game, Tug of War, Chinese Calligraphy, Origami, and Arts & Crafts. Iron on design T-Shirts, Prizes and Gifts were given out to all participants.

“SUMMER FIELD DAY 2000” – held on July 9, 2000 at Columbus Park , sports competition and carnival games, 600 kids participated. Events such as 3 on 3-Boys/Girls Basketball Tournament, 50/100 Yard Dash, Football Throw, Water Balloon Toss, Soccer Kick, Basketball Shooting, Ping Pong & Spoon Walk, Chess & Checkers, Puzzle making, Electric Shock Game, Golf Putting, Ping Pong Rope Game, Tug of War and Origami design making. T-Shirts were given out to all participants. Trophies were given out to all winners.

 

OUR EVENTS 2001  

“WINTER FAIR 2001” - held at PS 124 on February 18,2001, Carnival Games, Cultural Performances and Basketball Tournament, 300 kids participated. Participants included the Golden Lions Club, Boa An Music Group, Matthew the Magician and the  NYC Police Department. T-Shirts were given out to all basketball participants and Iron On design T-Shirts were given out to all kids. Trophies and prizes were given to all winners.

 

“SUMMER FIELD DAY 2001 – held on July 15, 2001 at Columbus Park , sports competition and carnival games, 500 kids participated. Participants included Chinatown’s Crimson Kings marching band, NYPD, Fire Dept., & Chinatown Health Clinic.

FIRE MUSEUM TRIP

AAYC Kids visit the NY Fire Museum on 8-12-2001. All kids & Volunteers were given T-Shirts and had a great time listening to the Fire instructors and learning about Fire safety techniques.

First ANNUAL HIKING TRIP

AAYC & The Chinese Mountain Club of NY Team-up and take the kids hiking 9-9-01 at Silvermine Lake, Harriman State Park

 

OUR EVENTS 2002  

“WINTER FAIR 2002” - held at PS 124 on March 3rd, 2002, Carnival Games, Cultural Performances and 3 0n 3 Basketball Tournament, 500 kids participated. Participants included the Golden Lions Club, Boa An Music Group, The Chinese Magician. T-Shirts by And1 were given out to all basketball participants and Iron On design T-Shirts were given out to all kids. Trophies and prizes were given to all winners.

 

“SUSAN K. CHAN MEMORIAL for BREAST CANCER” - Held at Columbus Park on May 11th, 2002. Fund Raising for Awareness against Breast Cancer. Special guests included Alan J. Gerson (District One City Councilman), Ti-Hua Chan (NBC Reporter) and Patricia Wu (Channel 5 Reporter). Basketball scrimmages setup between Chinatown BB Veterans and Kids. Proceeds for this event were donated to Gouveneur Hospital.

 

“SUMMER FIELD DAY 2002” - held on July 14, 2002 at Columbus Park, Chinatown. Sports competition and Carnival games for kids 17 and under.  AAYC presents to Gouveneur Hospital $2500 check to FIGHT BREAST CANCER, money was raised from our Susan K. Chan memorial event held in May of 2002. Over 500 kids participated with trophies and prizes given out to winners. HAPPY KIDS (AND 1) donated T-Shirts to all the kids.

 

“SUMMERFEST in NY CHINATOWN” - held on August 16, 17, 18, 2002 at Columbus Park, Chinatown. AAYC co-sponsored this event along with the Manhattan Borough Presidents office and others. Event was held to promote Chinatown  by presenting a positive image of the community and stirring up economic demand to help jumpstart the economy in the wake of 911, to help out the Chinatown restaurant industry specifically through the tasting fest; to promote the arts/cultural orgs.  which can, in turn, help sustain tourism and to promote Columbus Park as Chinatown’s community park.  

Second ANNUAL HIKING TRIP  

 

AAYC & Volunteers take the kids & parents hiking 9-8-02 at Harriman State Park. Hiking and group barbeque. T-shirts given to kids.

 

OUR EVENTS 2003  

“ WINTER FAIR 2003” - held at PS 130 on March 2nd, 2003. Co-hosted with the Coalition of Asian American Children & Families.  Carnival Games, Cultural Performances and 3 0n 3 Basketball Tournament, 400 kids participated. Participants included the Golden Lions Club & Chinese Cultural Center. Iron On T-Shirts were given out to all kids. Trophies and prizes given to all winners.       

 

“2nd Annual SUSAN K. CHAN MEMORIAL for BREAST CANCER” - Held at Roosevelt Park on June 14th, 2003. Fund Raising for Awareness against Breast Cancer. 3 on 3 Basketball tourney and live band music highlighted this event. Health booths lined up along the park offering free medical advice and services to NY Chinatown residents.

 “5th Annual HIP Summer Field Day ’03” - held on July 13, 2003. HIP being the title sponsor, AAYC held our 5th annual children’s field day at Columbus Park. Sports competition, 3 on 3 basketball, Tai-Chi for kids, Puppet Show, Water Dunking, Cotton Candy & Carnival Games, 450 kids participated. T-Shirts were given out to all participating kids. Sponsors included HIP, Sing Tao Daily, TVB (USA), NYPD, Gouverneur Hospital, CACF and many others.

OUR EVENTS 2004  

“WINTER FAIR 2004” - held at PS 1, NY CHINATOWN, on Feb. 29, 2004.   Featuring carnival games, prizes for the kids,  magical performances, guests and Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus. 500 kids participated. Participants included the Golden Lions Club, PS 1 Kids, Dragon Boat ride and Health Care Providers (Gouvenuer Hospital, St. Vincent’s hospital). Iron On T-Shirts were given out to all kids and volunteers were given T-Shirts sponored by Pepsi Live Wire.

Fall 1998 – Senior Citizens Moon Cake Event – Sponsored by the Asian American Education and Heritage Foundation

Summer of 1999 – Gouveneur Hospital Outdoor Community Reach-Out. Sponsored by Gouveneur Hospital

Fall of 1999 – Chinese American Community Lunar New Year Celebration. Sponsored by Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, & Asian American Education and Heritage Foundation

Winter of 2000 – First Chinatown Lunar New Year Float Parade Sponsored by the Asian American Education and Heritage Foundation

Summer of 2000  “Celebrating Us” Co-Sponsor event with Celebrating Us group. Educationa & Cultural get together at PS 124.

Winter 2002 - Christmas Party for kids at the Chinatown YMCA - participated in organizing kids carnival game and prizes.

Summer of 2003  “Columbus park Flea Market” Co-Sponsor event with other NY Chinatown youth groups. All proceeds going to the youth programs in NY Chinatown.

Winter of 2003, Christmas Party for kids at "A Place for Kids" Sponsor Christmas activities and gifts for "A Place for Kids" after school program at PS 124, NY Chinatown.
